Can I sell my gold near me?

How can I tell if my gold is real?

There are a few ways to tell. First, you can check for any hallmarks engraved – these are usually on the back of jewellery like pendants, or the inside of rings. Engravings may include a 'traditional fineness mark', which tells you the precious metal used, and the 'standard mark', indicating the purity of the gold. For example, a 22ct gold piece of jewellery would have the standard mark of 916 – representing 916 parts per thousand.

We also use something called the 'ping' test here at H&T. Real gold makes a high-pitched pinging noise when knocked against another type of metal. A dull thud often means there's a good chance your gold isn't as pure.
