What are Britannia coins?

Britannia coins are British coins that feature the Britannia figure, holding a trident and shield, poised on top of a rock, robe flowing. This imagery symbolises the grace and power of the British Empire. Indeed, the Romans used an image of Britannia on coins as far back as 119AD, but this was to depict a colonised, conquered Britain, and symbolised the strength of the Roman, not British, Empire. The image made a comeback on coins under the reign of Charles II in the 17th century, portraying Britannia as a symbol of protection.

Since the original depiction, variations have been produced, including Britannia riding a chariot, Britannia with a union flag, and Britannia donning a helmet. However, the modern design (since 1987) by sculptor Philip Nathan remains the most popular.

Are Britannia coins pure gold?

The 1987  British Britannia coins were originally crafted in 22ct gold, designed to compete with other gold bullion coins like the South African Krugerrand, the Canadian Maple, and the American Eagle. However, different precious metals, including various gold purity levels, silver and platinum, are now available. 

Who produces Britannia coins?

They have been exclusively minted by The Royal Mint since 1987 at the Royal Mint in Llantrisant, Wales.

Are Britannia coins legal tender in the UK?

Yes - these coins are exempt from capital gains tax (CGT) for UK residents and officially count as legal tender.

Are Britannia coins available in both gold and silver?

Yes. The original 1987 Britannia coin was first issued as gold, but fine silver was introduced in 1997. Platinum Britannia coins were officially introduced in 2018.

What is the gold and silver purity of Britannia coins?

Originally, the modern gold Britannia coins were 22ct gold. However, the Royal Mint increased the gold coin's purity to 24ct (0.999.9) in 2013. Silver Britannia coins were also initially 0.958 purity. This was increased to 0.999 silver in 2013.

How should I care for my gold Britannia coins?

1.    To protect your Britannia coins, separate gold from silver and platinum. 
2.    Store them in an airtight, dry, secure place away from direct sunlight. 
3.    Gold coins don't necessarily have to be cleaned. In fact, doing so may damage them. 
4.    Gold is actually a delicate precious metal, so handle it with cotton, lint-free gloves and lay coins or bars on a clean towel or cloth, not a hard surface.
