What's the difference between a King George V and a half-sovereign gold coin?

These two denominations of King George V gold coins possess distinct characteristics and a history that dates to the reign of Henry VII. The full sovereign was first established in 1489 under King Henry VII, but it was not until 1544, when King Henry VIII was on the throne, that the half-sovereign was introduced.

Both coins were reintroduced in 1817. Half-sovereign production stopped in 1926 and resumed in 1980.

Because of their age and status as legal tender, both coins are exempt from hallmarking, yet they're both 22-carat gold. Their value is generally determined by the following factors:

o    The full King George V gold sovereign coin typically weighs 7.98 grams and has a diameter of 22.05mm.

o    The half-sovereign weighs 3.99 grams, with a diameter of 19.30mm.
