What are King Edward VII gold coins?
These are rare gold coins minted during the reign of King Edward VII, which lasted from 1901 until 1910. Sovereign coins have traditionally been produced for each monarch, and Edward VII was no exception.
The Royal Mint produced coins during his short reign, but only from 1902 onwards. This makes each King Edward VII full sovereign coin very special. Today, there are just over one hundred displayed in the Royal Mint Museum. Others, including those in our exclusive selection, are available for private collectors to purchase.

King Edward VII gold coins: FAQs
What's the difference between a King Edward VII full- and half-sovereign coin?
These two types of King Edward VII coins have important differences. The full sovereign was introduced under King Henry VII in 1489, while the half-sovereign appeared later, under King Henry VIII in 1544.
Both types are exempt from hallmarking due to their age, and both also guarantee pure, 22-carat gold. Various factors determine their value and historical context, typically including:
Size and weight:
o The full sovereign usually weighs up to 7.99 grams with a diameter of 22.05mm.
o The half-sovereign usually weighs 3.99 grams and has a diameter of 19.30mm.
Gold content:
o Full sovereign coins offer a higher quantity and value of gold. This makes them attractive as a standout piece for prized collections.
o Half-sovereigns are usually priced lower, which provides more flexibility.
How are King Edward VII coins valued?
The rarity of a King Edward VII gold coin depends on its design and minting location.
In his last year as monarch, only 28,000 full-sovereign coins were minted in Canada. This makes them the rarest and therefore the most valuable. Conversely, those minted in London in the same year were highly prevalent. At least 22 million were produced.
Are these coins pre-owned or brand new?
All King Edward VII coins are pre-owned. Since they were minted over 100 years ago, they have a story to tell. Many of these coins were also once used as money in the early 20th century.
We take impeccable care to check every piece in our collection. We double-check every coin to make sure it is authentic. Additionally, we are always clear about the condition of each coin in its online description. You are welcome to visit our branches to see a specific King Edward VII gold coin in person.
Are these coins supplied in sealed packaging?
To keep them safe, we supply our coins in protective packaging. Most gold sovereigns are placed in clear, sturdy cases. This prevents scratches and keeps the coin in the same condition it arrived with us in.
Rare coins may come in unique presentation boxes. We pay close attention to how we package and prepare every item. We want to make sure your piece of history arrives at your door safely and securely.
Do the coins come with a certificate of authenticity?
While these coins are not stamped like bars, they still come with proof of quality. For historic coins, the 'certificate' is often the coin itself or its professional grading.
