Why gold bars are good collectors' items
Many enjoy collecting and purchasing gold bars for three main reasons:
- Tax advantages: Gold bars are exempt from VAT if they have a purity of 99.5% or above.
- Low premium: The low premiums on gold bars make them a cost-effective way to acquire gold. Buying larger bars or quantities at a time can result in a lower percentage cost per unit.
-
Easy to store and sell: Gold bars keep well over time. And because of the reliability of the value of gold, they will likely sell relatively easily.
How much does a gold bar weigh?
Gold bars are available in different sizes, which in turn means different weights. Common gold bar size ranges are:
· 1 gram
· 2 grams
· 2.5 grams
· 5 grams
· 10 grams
· 20 grams
· 50 grams
· 100 grams
· 250 grams
· 500 grams
· 1 kilogram
The size of the bar equals the weight, which is how the bars are listed and advertised. It's therefore very easy to find out how much a gold bar weighs.

Gold bar FAQs
How should I care for my gold bar?
• Handling: Only handle when necessary. Gold is a soft metal and can be easily marked. Use a soft cloth or towel to handle your gold bar and place this underneath where it sits.
• Storing: We recommend storing your bars in a home safe. Given that some can have high value, put your safe somewhere not immediately in sight. Don't have enough space at home? You can store your gold bars with a third party, such as your bank.
• Cleaning: Your gold bar doesn't need to be cleaned as the material won't tarnish. In fact, cleaning it could damage it.
How do I know if a gold bar is genuine?
At Harvey & Thompson, we use something called the 'ping' test. By slightly touching a gold bar with another type of metal, an authentic bar of gold will release a high-pitched pinging sound. However, if you hear a dull knock instead, you'll know that the bar is mixed with other metals and is likely to be of poor quality.
If you're unsure of your bar's authenticity, feel free to bring it into one of our UK stores, and an expert will be able to advise you.
What's the difference between cast and minted gold bars?
Minted gold bars are more uniform, typically having an ornate design and precise inscriptions such as the manufacturer logo, serial number, and hallmarks. Whereas cast gold bars are more industrial and won't have such a smooth or sleek finish. They do however both have the same high purity standards and quality.
